Here we will have a brief look at ten essential oils considered by some to comprise the &basic home care kit'. While by no means exhaustive, this list will go a long way to providing effective (and often pleasant!) treatments for you and your family for things like cuts and scrapes, sunburn, digestive troubles, stress related conditions and more. In the second article, we will cover specific applications and uses of each oil.

Oil #1: Lavender
Lavender has often been called the &medicine chest in a bottle' for its broad range of applications. Every home should keep Lavender on hand, even if no other oil is used, as it is so very effective on burns. It's anti-inflammatory action is responsible for the beginnings of modern aromatherapy, as Dr. Jean Valnet discovered Lavender's healing properties after being burned in a laboratory accident. Oil #2: Tea Tree
When first examined for it's antiseptic properties, Tea Tree essential oil was found to be 100 times more powerful than carbolic acid - the medical standard at the time. Tea tree has an extremely broad range of antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal properties that have been confirmed by modern scientific research. Often used topically on small wounds, Tea Tree is also commonly found in oral hygiene preparations, and can also be effectively employed for Candida, athlete's foot and acne, among other things.

Oil #3: Peppermint
An excellent digestive tonic, Peppermint essential oil can sooth many stomach complaints. For the traveler, it's effectiveness on calming motion sickness can be of great help. Further, at least eight controlled studies have shown Peppermint oil to be effective in reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, a painful condition of the intestines. Beyond it's support of the digestive system, Peppermint is delightfully stimulating to the mind, brightening and sharpening mental focus. Finally, Peppermint is considered by some to be a more effective insect repellent than citronella when used on the body (rather than in the surrounding air).

Oil #4: Chamomile
Ah, the great tension reliever, Chamomile oil. This extremely gentle essential oil

is useful for a wide variety of nervous conditions, and is often indicated for cases of stress in children (including teething and general &crankiness'). Rubbing into the solar plexus is a commonly used application if that is where one tends to &hold tension'. Chamomile essential oil is available in to varieties, German or Blue Chamomile and Roman Chamomile. The Roman variety is most often used for stress relief, whereas the German variety has the added bonus of being an extremely effective anti-inflammatory.

Oil #5: Eucalyptus
Another essential oil with a broad range of properties, Eucalyptus is most often used for respiratory conditions, being useful in clearing congestion with coughs and colds. However, it's effects are certainly not limited to the airways - because of it's broad range of effects, it has been called the aromatherapists &designer oil'. Eucalyptus oil can cool the body in Summer (or due to fever - use in a compress), and support the immune system in Winter. Diffusing Eucalyptus oil can kill most staphylococcus bacteria, again being supportive of bronchial infections. It is considered equally effective in cases of cystitis, candida, and sunburn, to name a few, as well as being an insect repellent.

Oil #6: Geranium
Geranium (sometimes known as &Geranium Rose') works wonderfully on both physiological and psychological levels. It's floral aroma is brightening and uplifting, while also working as a sedative. Oil #7: Rosemary
Rosemary essential oil is an effective physical and mental stimulant, whether used in a diffuser or in a morning bath. It's slightly spicy, rather than floral aroma, has a warming effect particularly useful for arthritic joints and other muscular complaints.

It also has a long history of treatment for colds and flu - Rosemary was a component of &Four Thieves Vinegar', which robbers rubbed upon their bodies to prevent infection when up to no good during the plague years of the middle ages. Also, Rosemary is the essential oil most often associated with improving hair growth in cases of Alopecia.

Oil #8: Thyme
Thyme oil is a powerful antiviral, antibiotic, antiseptic and diuretic, though it should be employed with great care. There are many types of Thyme oil available, but only the &linalol' chemotype is appropriate for use with children; all varieties should be diluted prior to topical application. Given the precautions, Thyme can be a first line of defense in cases of flu, being used in a room diffuser. It also supports elimination of toxic wastes from the body (particularly noted for excessive uric acid), and it's warming quality can eliminate mucous and phlegm. It's application for the digestive system is that of a powerful anti-parasitic, and for the muscular system, it can be helpful for rheumatic aches and pains. Thyme oil may also be supportive in cases of hair loss.

Oil #9: Lemon
A recent study on test-taking college students showed the diffusion of Lemon oil into a room improved test scores more than any other oil. In addition to it's mind-brightening qualities, it can also disinfect room air and act as a natural deodorant.

Lemon has been noted to support liver function, and is also commonly used to assist in weight loss and cellulite reduction. In blends, lemon adds a pleasant top note, and can create a synergistic effect with other oils. Finally, Lemon oil is commonly used as both a fragrance and flavoring agent.

The power of Clove essential oil is noted upon the first sensing of the aroma - it is quite strong, sharp and earthy. Clove oil has been found to be the strongest anti-oxidant of any essential oil, and is a component of &longevity' formulas. It is also an extremely potent antibacterial, effective against a broader range of microbes than any other oil except perhaps Oregano - Clove oil has even been employed to sterilize surgical instruments. Clove also has analgesic properties, and can be used to temporarily reduce the pain of toothache. Clove oil (or ground cloves) is also a component of Dr. Huda Clark's anti-parasite protocol, helping eliminate parasites from one's digestive system. This is a very powerful oil which should be diluted to 1% or less for topical application.

So, there we have a possible &top ten' essential oils for the home medicine chest, a selection with an extremely broad range of uses for common ailments seen in a family setting. It is important to note that all essential oils are powerful, and they should be treated with caution and respect. Always refer to a trusted source before making specific applications of any oil, as many can be irritating or possibly toxic if used incorrectly.

Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences developed as he worked with brain injured adults and autistic children. He identified distinct portions of the brain that control specific human abilities or talents like analysis, classification, speech, self-awareness, etc. He has identified eight distinct abilities that he refers to as "intelligences": verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and the naturalist. In addition to the biological basis for these intelligences, Gardner also places great emphasis on cultural influences that may impact the development of each intelligence.

Culture determines what parents and schools will teach their children based on the needs of the community. Gardner says: "It is the culture that defines the stages and fixes the limits of individual achievement." For example, educators have found that the Mexican American culture places a strong emphasis on community and on family; therefore, many members of this community have well-developed interpersonal intelligences.

The influence culture has on the development of the intelligences points to one of the most important components of the theory -- the makeup of intelligences changes over time with age and with experience. Thomas Hatch profiled the intelligences of several children when they were in kindergarten and again when they were in the sixth grade. He discovered that their intelligence profiles had changed over time. Hatch says: "Just because young children display particular capacities does not necessarily mean that they will grow up to excel in activities involving those capacities. Children's intelligences, the manner in which they display them, and how successful they are, shift, grow, and vary over time."

In other words, if intelligences change with time and experience, they can be learned. If they can be learned, they can be taught. As a result, students who are not strong in one intelligence can be taught to develop that intelligence. According to Bruce Torff: "The intelligences develop - they grow and change over time, which allows strengths to be exploited and weaker areas remedied. ...If you provide the right kinds of support for students, they build the kinds of intellectual structures that enable them to do things."

David Lazear says that teachers should watch for "ways to help students stretch into new intellectual areas - maybe areas in which they are uncomfortable or weak." Not only are weaker areas strengthened, but students develop a better self-image because they use a well developed intelligence to improve a weaker one.

In an interview with Kathy Checkley, Gardner said: "Teachers have to help students use their combination of intelligences to be successful in school, to help them learn whatever it is they want to learn, as well as what the teachers and society believe they have to learn." In other words, Gardner believes that teachers need to find ways to incorporate instruction into their classrooms that encourages students to develop weaker intelligences by drawing on their strengths. This in turn improves both attitude toward learning and academic achievement.

Most people would think of fall as a season when trees are changing colors and dying. For many, the autumn leaves are our last dance with color before the dark, gray winter sets in. It doesn't have to be that way, though. Fall flowers can offer a splash of rebirth and color in a season otherwise known for falling leaves.

Bulbs are living plants and contain their own storage of food. They are quite self-sufficient and will strive to bloom, no matter when or where they are planted. Fall flower bulbs are planted in the spring or summer and flower in the early fall. Some examples are lilacs, colchicums, and saffron crocuses. The colchicums are extremely unusual in that they will bloom without being planted, though they do need soil to develop roots.

When selecting fall flower bulbs, you should look for bulbs that are firm and free of visible defects. If you desire large flowers, buy large bulbs. Small bulbs will produce smaller flowers.

Most fall flower bulbs cannot survive the winter. These have to be dug up each fall and stored until planting time. Bulbs should be stored in a cool, dry place. A dry basement is ideal. If you do not have a basement, a dark, unheated closet or utility room will also work.

For individual planting directions, use your package. Most bulbs grow best in well-drained, loose soil. Standing water or excessively moist soil will cause bulbs to rot. Do not plant bulbs at the bottom of a hill.

Bulbs should be planted six to eight inches in the soil. Cover and pack firmly. After planting, water your bulbs thoroughly. Water them occasionally, and they should bloom in early autumn.

I am doing what you do, sitting at my computer, trying to get my thoughts out of my head and into a written form that will help you make a decision. In this particular case, I am trying to write a few intelligent remarks about sounding conversational on paper. You know, how to write a fundraising letter that sounds like it came from the mind of a person and not an institution.

I suppose the first thing I can tell you is that you should write the way you talk, unless, of course, you talk in halting sentences punctuated with "ya knows" and "like, you know what I mean?" And if you usually write fundraising letters that are signed by someone else, your executive director, for example, then you need to write the way that person speaks.

The secret to sounding personal and conversational on paper is to imaging that you are actually having a conversation with your donor. A back-and-forth exchange where your donor asks questions and you supply answers. That way, your letter sounds like it is written by a living, breathing person, since it addresses issues that are important to the donor, and does so in a warm, lively style.

Which reminds me, try to keep your sentences short. Not like the one that ended the last paragraph. What else can I tell you?

Rhetorical questions are one device at your disposal. Rhetorical questions, as I am sure you know, are questions that are asked for rhetorical effect, not expecting an answer. You can use one or two in your letter if you like. Rhetorical questions create the sense that a conversation is taking place between you and your donor.

I don't have to tell you that another way to sound conversational is to use the first person a lot. That means you say, "Your gift today means a lot to me," instead of saying "Your gift today means a lot to us," or, even worse, "A gift from you designated towards our Annual Fund will be appreciated at this time." Remember, people give to people, not to establishments, so you want to sound like a person, not an organization when you write your donor appeal letters.

I just thought of another one. Without being fake or insincere, mention that you thought of your donor today, or yesterday, or recently, showing that there is a relationship between the two of you. Naturally, only say "I was thinking of you this morning" if you actually were. Otherwise you will be making stuff up.

You may be relieved to know that that you can be colloquial, too, which is a humdinger of a way to establish rapport and sound genuine. If your donors know what a humdinger is, then by all means throw one into your letters at least once a year. You goal, if I may say so, is to sound authentic without being overly familiar or coarse.

Another way to sound conversational is to be open in the way you talk about things. Give your donors a glimpse into what life is like at your organization. You probably want an example of what I mean, so here it is (here are two examples, actually):

Institutional: "Your membership is about to expire." Conversational: "I see from our records that your membership is coming up for renewal soon."

Institutional: "Prayer meetings were held today at head office about Hurricane Katrina."

Conversational: "All of us here at the office in London met this morning to pray for the victims of Hurricane Katrina."

Another sure way of avoiding "bureaucratic-speak" is to say everything in the active voice. Don't say "funds were raised" when you can say "we raised funds." Avoid writing "100 scholarships will be created" when you can instead write "we will create 100 scholarships." See the improvement? Passive voice sounds institutional. Active voice sounds conversational.

I suppose if you went back to the start and began reading this message again, you'd pick up a few methods that I did not mention (using parentheses like this, for example, which look as though you are lowering your voice and whispering a piece of inside information to your donor). I hope that these tips help you write effective fundraising letters. Ones that come from your heart, and are effective mainly for that very reason.

Canine mastitis is a breast infection in brood bitches, usually occuring a few weeks after whelping. It is not that common, but you should be aware of it. The breasts of a lactating brood bitch are normally warm and enlarged, but never red, dark, hot or painful when touched. Advanced canine mastitis presents as a hard, hot and almost black breast segment, which is extremely painful for the brood bitch when touched. Canine mastitis can be caused by weaning puppies too early, severe scratches from puppies claws or some other infection.

A bitch with canine mastitis may be running a fever, be listless and possibly be off her food. She may not allow her puppies to nurse, and if she does, she will be "snappy" when they touch the affected area.

Treating Canine Mastitis

With so many estate agencies vying for your business, choosing the right agency can be difficult. We have put together the following top ten tips to help you find and use the most appropriate estate agent to sell your house.

1 - Shop around

Shopping around different agents is a must and will allow you to get a good idea of the different prices and service you can expect. If the agent knows that you are talking to their competitors, you are more likely to get the deal you want on their fees.

2 - Local presence

Opt for agents with a good local presence. Good indicators of a local presence are plenty of boards, reading 'sold', a prominent office on the local high street and listings in the local papers. Speak to friends, family and colleagues about agents they have used in the past as personal recommendations are often invaluable.

3 - Valuations

Always get more than one valuation and don't always accept the highest. Quoting a high figure is one thing, actually achieving the sale is another. Try to find out from the estate agent if the figure is a result of knowledge and experience in the area or are they just trying to win your business.

Do your own research, using the internet and local papers to compare the valuation against other similar properties in the area.

4 - Sales and marketing package

Find out how the agent is planning to market your property and what the marketing collateral, i.e. brochures, adverts, website, will look like.

When it comes to selling, try to find out how good the agents will be at negotiating on your behalf. Do they appear organised, focussed and professional? Would you buy a house from them?

5 - Website

The Internet is now a very popular tool amongst people looking for new homes and it is vital that your agent has a good website to market your property with. Can the site be found on search engines, does it provide clear navigation to the property listings and are properties presented appropriately?

A number of agents also list their properties in the large national property search engines like RightMove and Fish4Homes, extending their reach to a further national audience.

6 - Trade association

Try to use agents that are members of associations, such as The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) or The Ombudsman of Estate Agents Scheme (OEA). You are more likely to get a professional service and if anything goes wrong the associations will often help you and the agent resolve the dispute.

7 - Fees

Negotiating a lower fee with the agent may prove to be a false economy. Remember the agent is working for you and by cutting their money, you will be reducing their incentive to work as hard on your sale.

Instead, try to create an incentive to benefit both parties. If the agent can get the full asking price, then let them have the full fee, but maybe you can negotiate a reduction in the fee, if they are not able to achieve the full asking price.

8 - Contracts

Read the contract thoroughly, ask questions and never sign up to anything that you do not understand. Check the period of time for which you will be legally bound. There is nothing worse than being locked in with an agent providing poor service. Insist on a time period that will allow you to change agents easily, such as monthly or even weekly.

9 - Multiple agents

To achieve a quick sale, you may want to use more than one agent to market your property. If so, another point to check on the contract is whether the agent insists on 'sole agency'. This means that they will still be able to charge you a commission fee, even if you sell your home privately or through another agent.

10 - Transparency

Estate agents are required by law to not make false or misleading statements about the features of a property.

They must also declare both promptly and in writing if either they, a business partner or relative would like to buy your property or if the agent will benefit in any way (above and beyond the agreed commission) from the sale of your property.

Here are 9 things that you can do when you feel like quitting your online business. It has worked well for me and others. It can help you too.

1. When you do feel very stressed out, frustrated, angry, and about to quit, take some nice, deep cleansing breaths. This will relax your mind and body.

2. If you feel like quitting, step back and give yourself some breathing room. Don't spend too much time online. Instead, spend shorter times going through your business (15 minutes each time).

3. Exercise is one of the best stress relievers that you should do on a daily basis. Walking, running, dancing, or whatever form of exercise you choose has many benefits for a stress free mind while building your online business. Do this on a regular basis.

4. Shut the computer down for the day and turn your attention to other things in your life that make you feel absolutely great. Anything that takes your mind off your business can and will help.

5. Tell yourself that you are a winner. Winners like you never quit, and quitters never win. You are not like them. You have to know that you are a winner no matter what.

6. Don't give up and quit when you feel like it. Success could be just around the corner. Desperation has a way of getting your mental juices flowing and there just may be a solution in that flow. Now, if you were just one step away from reaching your goal, would you take that step? What a shame it would be to stop making the effort, when just a little bit more would make it all worthwhile. What a shame it would be to have taken all those steps, only to miss the very last one. The next step you take may very well be the one that makes all the others count. At some point success is just one step away. Keep going and you'll be there.

Just make sure you fill in the blank with something you never want to see happen, because here comes the bad news - someday never comes.

A really nice way to get your head around the notion that someday never comes is to grab a calendar and take a look at the days of the week. Let's see, my calendar has:

Monday - For those of us you love what we do, a pretty cool day. For the "Garfields" out there, not such a great day.

Tuesday - "Sic transit gloria mundi-- Tuesday is usually worse." - Starman Jones

Wednesday - Hump day and all that.

Thursday - Good TV night.

Friday - TGIF.

Saturday - Sleep late.

Sunday - Used to be a day of rest. Rinse and repeat.

If you review the above list, you'll notice that you just can't find Someday anywhere. So not only does someday never come, it doesn't even exist!

So what do we do? After getting rid of the notion of someday, here's a 4-step plan to turn your somedays into something real.

1. Set a goal

Pick something that up until now you have said you will do "someday." This answers the question "What do I want?"

Let's say you want to get into better shape by exercising for 30 minutes or more a day, five times a week. After choosing your goal, next you......

2. Turn your someday into one day

A goal is just a wish (a someday) with a deadline." To turn your someday into one day, you want to set a target date. This answers the question "When do I want it?"

In our example, you can say that 90 days from now, you will be exercising 30 minutes or more a day, five times a week. At this point it's helpful to do two things:

write your goal down and keep it somewhere that you can be reminded of it each day

share your goal with someone else who will hold you accountable.

3. Commit to small daily actions

Most large goals are accomplished through small daily actions repeated over time. This answers the question "When am I going to do this?"

Many people give up on their goals because they seem too large or will take too long. Here's where you narrow your focus - for our example, it's saying "Just for today I will exercise for at least 30 minutes." For just right now, for today only, it does't matter what you did yesterday, and it doesn't matter what you will do tomorrow. "Today I will!"

4. Take at least one immediate action

This is such a powerful yet little used trick. Whenever you decide to set a goal, before you leave the scene of that decision take at least one concrete action toward your goal.

This answers the question "When will I get started?" with RIGHT NOW! This gets you started right away, allows you to experience some immediate success and builds momentum.

In our example, you could begin exercising immediately, or call and schedule an appointment with your doctor, a fitness coach, or to check out the local health club.

Following these four steps allows you to do something that surprisingly few people ever get to do:

turn your someday into one day and soon one day will be today!

What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a quality management program that is designed to achieve a "six sigma" level of quality for products. In the mid 1980s, Motorola pioneered Six Sigma and it has since been adopted by many other companies and manufacturers. Service companies also implement Six Sigma strategies to improve customer service and relations.

The idea behind Six Sigma is that failures in quality and customer satisfaction occur after the sixth sigma of likelihood in a normal distribution curve. Hence, the idea is that there are less defects per product or customer service. Motorola defines the success of six-sigma quality in terms of the number of Defects Per Million Opportunities.

Why Use Six Sigma?

Many companies and critics of Six Sigma believed that achieving six levels of quality was impossible, but many companies have proved the critics wrong. Some companies even go beyond six-sigma. An example of this is GE Aircraft Engines, which operate at Nine Sigma levels of quality. Six sigma is practical because it reduces the amount of errors in customer service and products. This leads to increased customer satisfaction, increased revenue, more returning customers, and the acquisition of new customers. Companies that can implement six-sigma successfully have higher standards of quality and usually produce better products and services.

Why is it only Six Sigma?

Many people do not know how six-sigma relates to 3.4 defects per million. Essentially, people do not know how having six levels of sigma improves quality significantly. Many companies used to have less sigma, usually about three or four. However, Motorola was the first to use six levels. Six is the perfect number because whereas four sigma makes sure that there are only about 2.6 problems in a thousand. However, the problem arises with deviation. Imagine a manufacturing process in which a drill makes a hole that is supposed to be 100 micrometers. With four levels of Sigma, only about 1 in 400 will be defective. This unfortunately does not take into account the average value of measurement, which will shift over time. So, if the measurement gradually drifts as each new hole is drilled, about 6.6% of the output will be off by 1.5 sigma in each direction at anytime. If the process has drifted by 150 micrometers, then the hole will be off by 300 micrometers, which is an extremely large defective rate. Using 6 sigma, with a 1.5 sigma shift to make up for average deviation, the ratios are much lower and therefore the defective rates are much more sensible. The same drift in a six-sigma process will still only produce a defect for products or services that are more than 4.5 sigma away from the average in the same direction. Using the mathematics of a normal curve, this works out to 3.4 defects per million which is much more acceptable.

Conclusion

Customers value quality above all other things in a business. If a business produces a high quality product or service, more customers will return, and that business will gain new customers. Six-sigma helps to ensure the quality of goods and services is only the best. Six-sigma, when implemented correctly, is very effective and that is why many companies today use Six-sigma. This process was pioneered more than 20 years ago by Motorola, and has proven its lasting qualities through its continued use in the business world. Any company that wants to gain and retain customers while producing a high-quality product should consider the use of Six-sigma.

Infamy is nothing new to MIT. Some of the world's wiliest hackers hailed from the hallowed halls of MIT; but when one gifted math professor and six gifted students banded together, they propelled organized hacking to dizzying heights and snookered organized gambling to the tune of millions! That was sweet music to the ears of millions who have left behind small fortunes in their quest to beat the casinos.

After school club

The MIT Blackjack team began as an after-school club held in campus classrooms where students assembled to apply their genius to card games, unwind (at least, by MIT standards), and have fun. The club eventually evolved into serious business.

The team set up a complete underground system of casino mock-ups spanning apartments, warehouses, and classrooms scattered across Boston where they worked diligently to perfect their scheme. Still, they were not ready for the big league until further honing their skills in Boston's Chinatown before heading to Las Vegas.

Card Counting

Card counting, the heart of their system, is a proven winning technique. The casinos know that Blackjack is vulnerable (that smart, disciplined players actually have a fighting chance of winning), and that is why they ban the big winners and harass and threaten potential big winners.

takes only one or two mistakes to turn a player's winning system into a house win, and that is the only reason that they tolerate card counting-until it turns against them. They rely on human frailties, such as lack of discipline and distraction, to return the advantage to the house.

The MIT team used card counting as the foundation of their system; it was only one among a number of tools in their magical tool box, and even then, it wasn't traditional card counting. It added a high-low system, based on the statistical probability of receiving high or low cards, and they added an additional technique for cutting the cards that further skewed the odds in their favor.

Team members traveled together, seemingly as total strangers. Each assumed one of a number of well-crafted fake identities, the teams included several types of players, each member playing a well-defined role. Anonymous investors provided the stake and expected a return on their investment. One such outing netted a 154% ROI after expenses. Transporting huge amounts of cash back and forth was another obstacle they overcame with ingenuity. Cash traveled in every conceivable manner: strapped to bodies, on "mules," in hollow crutches, just to name a few.

High Tech vs Low Tech

Their reign spanned a good part of the 1990s when they traveled the casino circuit with total abandon. Their $400,000 winning weekend in Las Vegas is legendary. Casino technology was not yet at a stage where it could match wits with MIT genius. At least, it had not made its way to practical application in Las Vegas, Ironically, it would be low-tech sloppiness that brought the team down in the end.

The casinos had learned to deal with the card counters long before the MIT pikers hit the scene. When they identified a card counter, they would ensure that his play at the tables was a living nightmare, and should the card counter take the house for a large sum, they would immediately ban him. Technology in the 1990s had matured to a point where bad news traveled fast. When the card counter was detected at one casino, it became nearly impossible to escape detection at any other casino.

relied on a long-established profile of the Blackjack card counter, but since the MIT team ran counter to the profile, that also worked in their favor, helping them to escape detection. The profile assumed one lone card counter. The team's nonchalant, seemingly random style of play also ran counter to the profile. But they were crazy like foxes-until they were no more.

Finally, sloppiness brought them to their knees. Eventually, they lost their discipline and their cool; the well-oiled machine built with the precision of a Swiss watch began to fall apart. They began to fraternize, and not just with the usual Las Vegas temptations, but with each other-in public. A total chance spotting of the teams relaxing and playing at a Las Vegas pool blew their cover. The tale of their unraveling wound its way back to the back streets of Boston before they finally disbanded. The odds had finally turned against them, and the stakes were far too high for even the geniuses from MIT.

The last remaining team player was escorted from the table with the parting words, "You can't play here. You're too good for us."

Blackjack Team in the News

The tale of the MIT Blackjack Team doesn't end with its demise. ABC, CNN, History Channel, and CBS's 60 Minutes all picked up the story. Bringing Down the House : The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions (Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group, 2002), by Ben Mezrich, chronicles the escapades of the team from its inception to the end of the line through the eyes of team member, Kevin Lewis (not his real name). One enterprising former member currently offers seminars based on the system.

The final irony has yet to play itself out. Kevin Spacey is producing the movie version of the book, due to be released by MGM sometime in 2006. One has to wonder if the movie will help MGM recover its losses to the MIT Blackjack Team.

What is Credit?

Government Grants, Loans, Federal grants and Grant Money

Credit is money granted by a lender (or creditor) to a debtor (or borrower) whereby the lender defers receiving payment of the debt for a period. In exchange for the credit allowed, the lender will get back the money lent plus interest. The borrower has use of the money immediately, rather than waiting until the money required is saved up.

It enables the borrower to pay for things immediately, even if they cannot afford to pay for it themselves. Interest is the compensation required by the lender for the use of his/her money. There is a time value to money because of inflation, by way of an interest charge.

What is the Cost of Credit?
The cost, or charge, for using credit debt is called interest. This interest can either be simple interest or compound interest.

Simple interest
This is interest charged only on the principal amount borrowed. Simple interest does not add interest that's due, back on to the principal amount because it is usually paid out.
Compound interest
This is interest charged, not only on the principal amount owing, but also on the interest that has been accrued on that principal amount. The interest is added on to the principal and then the new interest is calculated on the new total of those two items.

What happens is that there is a compounding effect, so that interest is charged on the interest. The result is that the lender receives a higher and higher return because the interest charge is levied, not only on the amount originally lent, but also on all interest due on the amounts over the term of the loan.

APR - Interest Rate
The APR is the reference to the interest rate the lender charges the borrower for the use of the money. You need to know a little about APR because it shows what the cost of the credit actually is. The cost of credit is more than just knowing the interest rate; it is important to be familiar with the annual percentage rate.

The APR is the cost of credit measured on a yearly basis and expresses a yearly rate. By comparing the APR of loans or credit cards etc you can work out which card is likely to cost you the most. Recently the FTC, Federal Trade Commission put forth a report on franchising. They want to further add to the franchise rule, even though they should be reducing regulation since there is not fraud to speak of. In our country we have identity theft and identity creation costing this country billions of dollars and destroying family credit, chances to own a home and allow them to join the ownership society. We have SPAM costs businesses some 30-57 estimated billions of dollars per year in lost productivity. In the last 24 hours I have received 2336 emails and only 120 were legitimate, the rest was SPAM.

As far as Law Enforcement experience at the Federal Trade Commission, I think there is work that needs to be done and I would not call what has been done in franchising regulation enforcement; law enforcement experience. You can call it grandstanding with fancy meetings, press releases, PR events, case filings, but the fact is that the Federal Trade Commission has failed. The FTC failed. My SPAM has gone up 3000% since up started enforcing it? Identity theft has run ramped. On October 28, the FTC announced at a meeting of private investigators that they had filed now 63 cases against SPAM. Guess what it is not working, my SPAM is still increasing? So if filing lawsuits is considered a law enforcement experience, it is not any problems. Similarly the FTC's failure to bring relevant and honest cases against disreputable franchisors show one of two things, either;

A.) There is no real fraud to be found

B.) The cases brought forth are all like my case with the FTC, totally bogus.

I believe judging from my experience with this purported noble agency of balance and justice that it in fact it is a combination of those two scenarios. Thus why do we have a franchise rule in this country at all? The industry would be better served and better controlled by consumer watchdog Blogs. If a good majority of the 63 SPAM cases filed by recently by the FTC are like those filed against reputable franchisors then many of these cases are indeed against innocent parties as well. Thus the only real reason for the cases is a "feel good" thing for consumers to think someone is watching out for them, when in fact those watching out for them cannot solve the problem at all. Simply filing cases or throwing money at a problem does not mean you are a legitimate agency or accomplishing anything in your endeavors, both the franchising regulatory issues and the SPAM issue seem to show a similar trend at the commission and it is not very becoming of the Justice Department or regulatory agencies in general. If this is what is meant by the FTC's law enforcement experience, then such catastrophic failure to protect the consumer is unworthy of mention and a different phrase should be used. "The Federal Trade Commission's failure in law enforcement indicates that...." Perhaps that would be more appropriate in this report on the franchise rule? I therefore believe that the phrase "Law Enforcement Experience in the second page of this report in the background section is inappropriate and if this is the basis for allowing the Federal Trade Commission to supervise and continue in the rule making process then it must be stopped at once and barred from the franchising industry all together.

The FTC is a duplication of other agencies and always tooting it's own horn, but in reality it does not do a whole lot of anything really. I speak mostly to the consumer protection division which overseas the Franchising Rule part of things; however if one were to review the break up of AT&T in hindsight or the Microsoft Case based on competitor complaints such as Oracle and AOL, both of which in the news for questionable activities within the last year, one has to wonder about the abilities of the FTC at all. What did the break up of AT&T accomplish. Have your folks ever read Ayn Rand? Can we trust the Federal Trade commission at all? I have an anti-trust towards the FTC these days.

Think on this, I'll get back to you; no I am not done, yet just going to take a coffee break, surely the FTC knows what those are? After all they don't do anything there, but file bogus cases and misrepresent their value to society, consumers and civilization. You folks are not wearing any clothes at the FTC. Fluff and puffery, while you destroy free enterprise and innovation in America. What a pathetic joke indeed.

Make sure you keep the title to about 70 characters. Google will not take in all the words on a long title.

The next step is to optimize the names of your graphic images. Rename the graphic image's file name to your keyword phrases. Separate each word with a -. Do this only once for each keyword phrase or you risk Google classifying you as a spammer. After you rename the graphic image, put your keyword phrases in the alt tag.

The next step I do is set I do is put in the body text. The more text your body has the better. Currently you should have more then 250 words and less then 1200 words. (1000 being the optimum). Now you must insert your keyword phrases. If your keyword phrase is gramically incorrect, try to put the words for each phrase close together. Google uses proximity in determine how important your webpage is. Your keywords should appear a lot in the beginning. A little in the middle of the document, then more at the end. You should strive for a 3% density ratio, or each keyword to appear one time out of every 33 words.

Besides the title, the header gives a lot of weight in your Google rankings. The HTML

tag gives the greatest pull.

Up until 30 years ago, JUDO was the martial art. Then with the introduction of the more mysterious martial arts with more of a "killing" edge to them this coupled with the focus of the USJF/USJI (the leading Judo organizations in the US and the world) focus on Olympic competition and the simple fact that training in judo is painful and to this day, very difficult to get a black belt rank in it, especially if you are in a competitive area. I could probably write another 5 pages on this, but I will stay on point.

During these years EVERY major metropolitan Police Department had a Judo club. Even countries like Thailand taught Judo to there police force, NOT Muay Thai. I personally train a number of law enforcement officers and I have seen the results first hand. So why is Judo the martial art for law enforcement?

The primary purpose of non-lethal force with law enforcement is to get your target to comply. What is the most realistic way of getting someone to do something you don't want to with out seriously damaging them? How can you get someone from their feet to the ground as quickly as possible? How do you know what its going to be like for real? The answer is JUDO.

First off, when most people "resist" arrest, it's an ego thing. They are looking to be restrain, or they don't want to look like a punk and go quietly. The advantage the cop has is that the suspect knows that the officer is not trying to kill him or her. I realize this is a disadvantage in some situations, but that's what the stuff @ www.thetruthaboutselfdefense.com is for.

First, the object of judo is to throw the opponent from his feet to his back. Think about the majority of the altercations policemen get in, most of the time the skel is just kind of testing the officer. One of the primary components of judo is being able to stay on your feet. You develop this skill as a by-product of the training. Just gaining the ability to stay on your feet is worth the price of admission. Especially when you are in a &scrum' maintaining your balance is a primary concern.

The fact is, there is not better way to practice imposing your will on someone who is non compliant. Nothing gives you greater confidence than throwing a man that has 100 pounds on you. Nothing. Especially when that guy doesn't want to be thrown.

Another important component is the pinning and submissions of judo. To secure a full point in judo you need to hold him on his back for 25 seconds. Being able to hold a man down until the cavalry arrives will save your life. Plus, while this guy struggles, you are just squeezing the life out of him. Trust me, when it comes time for you to put the cuffs on him, he'll be as compliant as a wet noodle.

Strangles and arm-bars, yep, Judo has them too. If you have to put someone "out of commission" and you really want to know how to strangle someone who doesn't want to be strangled, you've come to the right place. When they wake up, you will have them cuffed and ready to go. (Uh-oh, the choke hold alarm! Hey, I am not talking about liability; I am just trying to save your life).

Lastly the overall toughening and body conditioning is second to none. If you can "randori" for 30 minutes, non- stop - you're in really good shape. So why aren't some many people, knocking down the doors of every Judo club. Because it's hard work and it hurts. There's no junior black belt, student of the month. Your gi is white and the work is hard. No secrets, just hard work.

The irony and the tragedy: the guys who train with me are only a few. Most of the guys interested in this type of training are SWAT or tactical guys. Unfortunately, these guys are the least likely to get in a roll around. That's the irony. The tragedy is the guys who

are most likely to need good hand to hand fighting skills are the patrolmen doing car stops, domestic violence; and all of the first response details. By the time the SWAT shows up, the situation is intense and the reality of a hand to hand confrontation is highly unlikely if not damned near impossible.

That being said, we ran four novel experiments: (1) we asked (and answered) what would happen if topologically randomized information retrieval systems were used instead of flip-flop gates; (2) we dogfooded our framework on our own desktop machines, paying particular attention to effective tape drive space; (3) we measured RAID array and DHCP latency on our real-time testbed; and (4) we deployed 53 Motorola bag telephones across the 10-node network, and tested our expert systems accordingly. We discarded the results of some earlier experiments, notably when we deployed 72 UNIVACs across the Internet-2 network, and tested our multi-processors accordingly.

Now for the climactic analysis of experiments (3) and (4) enumerated above. Note how rolling out digital-to-analog converters rather than simulating them in bioware produce less discretized, more reproducible results. The data in Figure 6, in particular, proves that four years of hard work were wasted on this project. Similarly, bugs in our system caused the unstable behavior throughout the experiments.

We next turn to the second half of our experiments, shown in Figure 4. Note that Figure 6 shows the median and not effective separated ROM space. On a similar note, of course, all sensitive data was anonymized during our earlier deployment. The key to Figure 4 is closing the feedback loop; Figure 3 shows how Ren's optical drive space does not converge otherwise.

Lastly, we discuss the first two experiments. Note how emulating multicast solutions rather than deploying them in a controlled environment produce more jagged, more reproducible results. Second, the key to Figure 2 is closing the feedback loop; Figure 2 shows how Ren's hard disk throughput does not converge otherwise. Further, operator error alone cannot account for these results.

Related Work Regarding the Impact of Efficient Epistemologies on Algorithms

A number of prior algorithms have evaluated game-theoretic archetypes, either for the simulation of 802.11b [4] or for the construction of evolutionary programming. Similarly, while Williams and Jones also proposed this method, we refined it independently and simultaneously [7]. Finally, the application of Suzuki [2] is an important choice for stable methodologies. Our design avoids this overhead.

A number of existing applications have enabled cacheable archetypes, either for the emulation of the World Wide Web [9,8] or for the exploration of active networks. Without using heterogeneous configurations, it is hard to imagine that the much-touted psychoacoustic algorithm for the emulation of the transistor by Z. Lakshman et al. follows a Zipf-like distribution. While Smith et al. also proposed this approach, we studied it independently and simultaneously. This is arguably ill-conceived. Recent work by D. Sasaki et al. suggests a system for caching knowledge-based models, but does not offer an implementation. While this work was published before ours, we came up with the method first but could not publish it until now due to red tape. All of these solutions conflict with our assumption that courseware and the emulation of e-commerce are robust. Our application also studies the memory bus, but without all the unnecssary complexity.

The Impact of Efficient Epistemologies on Algorithms Conclusions

In this work we described Ren, new empathic methodologies. We proposed a solution for access points (Ren), which we used to demonstrate that fiber-optic cables [5,4] and architecture can synchronize to fulfill this purpose. We also constructed new scalable technology. Our system cannot successfully harness many sensor networks at once.

Think you have what it takes to be a freelance copywriter? I wasn't so sure I knew when I first started in 1999. All I knew was I desperately wanted to work from home to raise my two sons after my divorce. It took a lot of trial and error to get to the stabile and profitable business I am running now in 2005. There are some things I learned along the way I wish I knew much earlier in the game.

One thing I learned is that writing is a very small part of being a successful freelance copywriter. Don't get me wrong. You DO need to know how to write. But your success depends largely on your savvy as a businessperson. How do I know? Because I've played it from both sides of the street. And I didn't begin to enjoy success until I started doing some very distinct things in my business.

Please let me share with you some of the mistakes I made starting out so you can avoid those pitfalls yourself...and catapult to success much faster than it took me.

Mistake #1: Don't attract new clients.

When I first started out in 1999 I had exactly one client. He kept me very busy...for awhile. Then, without warning, he suddenly shifted his business to 100% offline and began using a copywriter with more experience in that area. I floundered for 10 months before I got back on my feet again from that blow.

Solution: NEVER stop marketing yourself. Even if you have a full practice, don't stop getting the word out. Write articles and press releases. Do interviews whenever possible. Start an ezine and/or a blog so your name is always out there. Don't get caught flat-footed.

Mistake #2: Don't effectively manage your clients.

At first I was so grateful to have any clients I let them call all the shots - regardless of what was in my best interest. It took me a long time to realize every client is not a match for me. Sometimes they were unreasonable in deadlines. Other times they would call me at all hours...including 6 a.m. and even on the weekends. (Until I learned to communicate better there were even a few clients I had to fire!) Bottom line is you can never have enough communication.

Solution: Have the client fill out a detailed questionnaire to open up lines of communication. Get a feel for his or her expectations. Add an extra cushion to your deadline. If possible, get a gatekeeper (assistant) to set up schedule so you can focus on what you do best - writing.

Mistake #3: Poor time management.

Eager to please, I often did not give myself enough lead time for an assignment. I'd say, "I'll do it!" before I looked at the reality of my schedule. So I'd have to pull all nighters or miss important family events. I was incredibly stressed and not a lot of fun to be around.

Solution: Schedule your daily schedule BEFORE you go to bed at night. Turn off email until you've made some headway with your copy. And use a kitchen timer to work in increments of 35 minutes (studies show after that frame your mind craves distraction). When the ding goes off, get up, stretch and clear your head.

Mistake #4: Not getting paid enough as a copywriter.

Face it...copywriters do a lot more work than most people realize. We have to deeply research the client's business, competition and target market. Then we have to write excellent copy that crawls inside the head of the prospect and leads them to a specific action. I didn't find out until late in the game there is more than one way to structure a deal. I only recently figured out how to get paid on the front end AND the back end for my work. (There is still a ton I need to learn about this which is why I can't wait for the exclusive Dan Kennedy seminar on the business of copywriting in October!)

Solution: Value yourself enough to get paid what you're worth. Have an iron-clad contract that protects you.

Mistake #5: Don't invest in yourself.

I have read the classic "Think and Grow Rich" 14 times.

I have a huge marketing library of books, binders, home study courses, CDs, DVDs, MP3s and I listen to them over and over. Every step of the way I asked myself what a REAL air traffic controller would do in that situation, and then did that. Even when I wasn't completely confident, I forced my voice to at least sound confident. I acted the part until it became my reality.

So how did REAL netpreneurs approach their business and become successful?

Well, because it's impossible to think clearly while worried about how to pay this month's rent, they didn't spend their last dime on an business opportunity.

If you're currently in serious debt, then consider talking to a financial planner to help rework your finances.

Leo Quinn's 'Own Your Own PayCheck Again' is a terrific resource for those who are serious about debt relief. He prescribes uncommon methods that I know from first-hand experience really work.

His book is a bit pricey, but it's a far better investment than buying an information manual that instructs you to go out and spend even more to build your business, when you don't have it to spend. Why not learn some techniques on how to pay off your debt quicker and keep a little more in your pocket?

If you can afford to pay the bills but not much else, focus your energy on saving and earning the amount you'll need to build your business without worry. Invest small amounts on things that will bring real returns in the short term.

For example, scour your basement and your friends' basements for things to sell on eBay. The insertion fee for items listed at less than a buck is 25 cents US.

Cut your eBay fees in half and increase your sales with ProfitCalc

If the item sells for under 25 bucks, you'll pay a 5.25% 'final value fee' to eBay. Do that enough times and pretty soon you'll have five hundred or a thousand bucks to invest in your business... but only if you SAVE what you make.

Even if you have wads of cash, be realistic and informed about how you spend your money.

I've talked to far too many folks who invest in expensive coaching programs, believing that somehow their business will magically appear once they've completed the course.

In reality, whether you buy a $27.00 dollar, or a $5,000 Internet business coaching program, in most cases you're buying information on how to build a business, not a service that will do the work for you.

If that's what you want, then you may want to consider buying an existing business. However, it may be hard to find someone who has invested the time, effort and money to build a profitable online business, who is willing to sell. Basically, at that stage, the business should generate revenue automatically without a whole lot of input from the creator... so they'd be a little daft to sell, don't you think?

Do your due diligence. Read the fine print, ask questions and understand exactly what you're getting. And with regard to those coaching programs.... get a written contract, and search the forums for at least five people who have taken the program and were really happy with it... i.e. aren't just saying good things because they're trying to sell you the program through their link.

If you choose to go the information manual route, plan to follow ALL the instructions, or fail otherwise.

For everyone who ever told me "I bought this, that or the other book (or DVD, course, program, coaching package) and it didn't work", it was easy to prove that it wasn't the book that didn't work - it was THEY that didn't work.

We can't expect to be successful with ugly websites, little or poor content, not building a list or not building a relationship with our visitors and subscribers.

The truth of the matter is that there are no shortcuts.

Each and every step is essential, and every successful netpreneur has paid his or her dues to get to where they are today. They did their homework, made mistakes, and learned the lessons - always believing in their ability to succeed.

Starting an internet business is still easier, faster and less expensive (by far) than starting an offline business. If you want to do it bad enough, you WILL find a way to make it work.

It's a brain explosion, no it's intellectual overload, no .........it's just "simply" too much all at once.

Yes, I'll admit it. I can't deny it. I am a Newbie. I've come a long way in the last nine months. And, I'm living proof that anyone can build a website and start their own internet home business. The best advice I can offer is to be sure to check out every program carefully. As a newbie you will need someone who will guide you from beginning to end and then further. Your journey will not end when your site is built. In fact, in many ways this is just the beginning.

You will need an all encompassing program that guarantees success. One that will take you step-by-step through the hosting, building, analyzing, marketing, and tracking process. To do all of these tasks separately just doesn't make sense and can get quite expensive.

Be sure that when you think you've found the program that's right for you, it offers a dependable support system. You Will Need IT! Take my word for it. Sometimes things just don't work for you because you're making one tiny little error, easily corrected with the stroke of the keyboard. Make sure they are there to help you figure it out so you&re not banging your head on the computer. Ouch!

Why am I constantly putting things off? Why don't I do the things I'm "supposed" to do, but don't really want to? Why do I always seem to be forcing myself to do things? Whether it's chores at home, work for school, or projects at work, how do I get beyond procrastination? Most often, something is operating "underneath" the procrastination. Asking yourself these nine questions and spending some conscious time reflecting on your responses can help you uncover why you are resisting doing what needs to be done and support you to move beyond procrastination.

1. What are the benefits of completing a task and what are the consequences of procrastinating? Another way to ask this question is by exploring these four additional questions: (1) what will happen if I do this? (2) what won't happen if I do this? (3) what will happen if I don't do this? and (4) what won't happen if I don't do this? Reflect on your responses and align with the energy and positivity of right action, doing the right thing, while visualizing successful completion.

2. What is my self-talk like? What are the thoughts that support my resistance? Are my thoughts positive and supporting, or limiting and self-sabotaging? Moving to thoughts of joy, appreciation and gratitude can support you to experience an energy shift allowing you to take action.

3. What is my diet like? Do you experience lows, lethargy, laziness and staleness after eating certain foods or drinking certain liquids? Begin to explore your relationship to food and drink and your energy and moods.

4. What is my Life Force (Chi) energy like? Blocked, lacking, low? When one's life force energy is blocked, there is usually some disequilibrium among mind, body and spirit. Movement which supports the flow of Chi energy (such as Yoga and Tai Chi) can restore balance and energy among mind, body and spirit, allowing your Chi energy to flow which supports action and activity.

5. Am I depressed? You might want to have a physical exam and ask for a professional opinion to explore the possibility of a deeper malaise that may be affecting you.

6. What might be a competing committing that keeps me from acting? In other words, there is something I value more than the task I am resisting. This competing commitment is usually fear-based. As an example, a self-employed entrepreneur is resisting organizing her physical space, her office and work environment. When she inquired into her resistance, by journaling deeply into it, she discovered that when she completed the organization of her space then her next goal would be to focus on her business and she was fearful about taking next steps to grow her business. So her competing commitment was to maintain the status quo and do nothing, to resist and procrastinate. So, what might be something you are valuing more, than the task at hand?

7. Am I "acting out" some childhood resistance, as an adult? For example, if you were brought up to believe that "neatness counts" or "you must be organized", you might be rebelling against this belief by not keeping an organized living or work space. It's important to look "underneath" the resistance to inquire about existing beliefs that are driving you to procrastinate.

8. Am I attempting to maintain some self-image? Many folks procrastinate in order to maintain a positive self-image and be "good." In other words, by procrastinating they exonerate themselves from potential blame if something goes wrong or does not work out as they hope, or plan. In such circumstances, these folks delay taking action in the face of deadlines.

These folks are poor self-managers and have difficulty self-regulating. The may spend an inordinate amount of time rationalizing dysfunctional behaviors as they are resisting "failure" in some way, shape or form. So, the resistance shows up as the following behaviors and attitudes: (1) Ignorance -- I didn't know I was supposed to do that; (2) Skill deficiency -- "I don't know how"; (3) Apathy -- "I really don't want to do" or, "It really doesn't make any difference if I put this off." and "No one really cares of I do this or not." or "I'm not in the mood."; (5) Fixed habits and patterns -- "I've always done it this way and it's hard to change."; and "I know I can do it at the last minute." or, "I work better under pressure."; (6) Inertia -- "I just can't seem to get started."; (7) Frail memory - "I just forgot."; (8) Physical problems - "I was sick.; and (9) Perfectionism - "I can't get started as it won't be perfect."

Asking yourself these eight questions can support you to get underneath procrastination and uncover what's really, really at the root of your inaction. By staying with your responses, and inquiring deeply into them, you can begin to raise your level of awareness about the nature of your resistance and then create and take action steps to move forward to both reduce and eliminate the root causes of your resistance and become a "doer" on a consistent basis.

On Sunday, June 19th 2005, I was fortunate enough to see hundreds of cyclists, young and less young, tackle the 13th Scottish Bikeathon in aid of Leukaemia Research.

The course of 26 miles wound its way through the spectacular Highland countryside, with some breathtaking sights along the way, as well as some pretty steep hills. What impressed me was not so much the fit and athletic who completed the course in next to no time, but the others who didn't usually attempt this kind of thing, but were absolutely determined to complete the 26 mile course. One of those was a 7 year old girl, who along with her father, slogged along from 10.45 in the morning until 3.30 in the afternoon, with only a half hour break for lunch. She wasn't the fastest, in fact I think she was the slowest, but she was not going to give up! That was determination! As she came to the finish there was the biggest, brightest smile I have seen in a long time. All that effort was definitely worth it and I know she'll be doing it again next year. How do I know? She told me. You see, she is my daughter.

How can determination help to move you towards your goals? The goal here was the finish of a somewhat tough 26 mile course. It was in the same place as the starting point, so was a clear landmark in everyone's minds.

In this case, moving towards the goal was made simpler by the fact that everyone was riding bicycles! If you didn't do something, like pedalling, you would go nowhere! However, you had to be determined to reach that goal. There was ample opportunity to give up, as there were support vehicles ready to take the weary and exhausted back to the start, and no-one would have judged you for it. The last half was particularly challenging, as there were quite a few long steep hills to climb. Completing the 26 miles was no simple task.

Can being determined help you do what you've been putting off for a while? Yes, indeed! Why not follow the example of those fantastic cyclists and get on your bike! Or put on your training shoes, or walking boots. Or join a dance class! What have you been putting off? What is weighing heavy on your mind that needs a kick-start? Do you really take care of yourself? What can you add into your life that will make a difference to your health and wellbeing? Show some determination and do something!

Determine to do something for yourself. A wonderful day out in the fresh, clean air, doing something to raise money for charity in the company of like-minded people. I don't know of anyone who participated in the Bikeathon who didn't have a tremendous sense of satisfaction at completing the course. This was the ideal situation of doing something challenging for you while helping others. Why not see if something similar is taking place somewhere near you?

Determine to do something active every day. You don't really get more active than this! 26 miles up and down hills. Pedalling hard and breathing with your full lung capacity. This is activity at its best!

Be determined to do something because you want to, not because you have to. Everyone who was participating was there because they wanted to be. This is not an event that you have to do. Determine to do something new every day. For many people taking part this was definitely a new experience. And for many of those, it is an experience they are determined to repeat next year!

Be determined to do something creative every week. Creativity manifests itself in many ways. Our imagination takes flight and we can see ourselves achieving all sorts of resourceful and inspirational things. Just cycling through the glorious Highland scenery is bound to have set someone's creative juices flowing. I'm willing to bet on it! What a great feeling!

Make sure you are determined to do something for nothing. This one is a tough one. This event was not for nothing. It was to raise as much as possible for the charity Leukaemia Research. However, I don't think there was one person taking part who did so for any recognition or glory. They took part for the challenge and the fun of it, and because they were determined to do it!

The Kilt has been the target of many a joke and ribald comment for more years than it can probably remember!

But is it fair for it to be the butt of so many jokes?

After all, not only is the Kilt a recognised fashion item in it's own right, it's also more importantly a world recognised symbol of a country and the fierce national pride contained within!

Many a soldier has shuddered and shaken in fear in centuries gone when faced with a Scottish Warrior, kilt swirling in steadfast defiance of normality, broadsword or other razor sharp lethal weapon cutting huges scythes in the air as he charged.

Indeed, many fields of war were won purely by the arrival of Scotsmen dressed in their tradional tartan kilts. To many, the knowledge that the wearer wore nothing underneath was cause enough to panic! Add to this the ferocity of such a warrior and not many would stand up in front of them.

But ever since those heady days of hand to hand combat and battles fought face to face, some of the mystery and folklore of the Kilt remains. Ideas that you can only wear a Tartan Kilt if you are a member of that clan still abide today, wrongly in many cases.

Maybe this stops some people wearing a kilt?

Or does the fear of society's view of a man effectively wearing what many still describe as a skirt also play a strong part?

But then what of those men among us who are recognised as being the manliest of men? Does wearing a kilt reduce their appearance and reputation at all? Famous celebrities such as Sean Connery, Billy Connely, Ewan McGregor or Mel Gibson?

How many women did - and still would - swoon clean away to see Mel Gibson walking towards them, kilt swaying in time to his steps? I strongly suspect - most! It would not be a swoon induced by dislike or scorn neither, more of one where they're opinion has been enhanced as to the character and strength of the man involved.

I had the great pleasure of wearing a kilt many, many years ago when I was 6. The occassion was as a Page Boy for my Uncle and Aunts wedding. White ruffled shirt, red and blue tartan kilt with sporran and shoes. the only thing missing was the Dirk. For some reason never suitably explained by my parents, they seemed very nervous of letting their 6 year old offspring walk around with a small dagger shoved into the top of his sock! Spoilsports!

Even now, looking back at the old black and white photos - yes, it WAS that long ago - I get a thrill of seeing myself dressed like that.

Why?

Because it was different, unique and - dare I say it - I looked damn good! (I seem to remember it made a huge impression on my fellow official for the occasion, the bridesmaid called Candy, a curly blonde haired girl a year older than me. I have a misty memory of her asking her mom why i was wearing a skirt!)

A kilt nowadays plays a much larger part. Beyond the more well known kilts of Scotland with their heritage of history behind each unique Tartan design, comes the Kilts of Ireland and Wales in family crests or solid colors.

With society relaxing it's own strict and nonsensical ideas of what is right and what is wrong, more men are coming to wear kilts, enjoying the uniqueness and freedom such a garment gives.

It is now more common to attend company dinners, awards and opening nights and spot one or two men dressed in kilted splendour.

Indeed, a whole new industry is beginning to grow - assisted by the internet with it's ease of ordering and choosing - where new styles, designs and ideas of the traditional kilt are being tested and reworked.

For example, you can now buy kilts in camo pattern or kilts with pockets either side as opposed to the standard requirement for a sporran.

As for me and the kilt - as I get older and less worried about what other people think of me, the thoughts do stray to when I was 6 years old and how proud I felt dressed in such regal splendour. With the hot weather getting hotter each day a cooling breeze would certainly be more welcome as well!

Now then, where did I put that sporran and dirk?

Moiromma: Iazrak [Part II, to Johannes' Strange Acquaintance] #22. Kauai Honeymoon Vacations.

Choose Planet Burma or Planet Myanmar

Little is known of this person, but I shall tell you what is known of him. Underneath Moiromma's four hundred feet of ice is a dead planet, much like Earth's moon; similar to a big snowball in the heavens, might be a better description of Moiromma. But, as I was about to say, underneath this ball of ice and snow was at one time, seas and rivers beautify flows of water and flowers everywhere, now tunnels, caverns and sink holes. At one time this planet was alive and beautiful, one of the most stunning discs in the solar system, now but a fossil to its inhabitants. And like earth it had its disastrous times, its meteor bombardments, if you will; its volcanic disruptions; its tsunami crushing [title] waves. It was not all that long ago when all the ice age prevailed, took over the planet, soaked deep within the planets crust. At which time an earthquake took place causing a vertical displacement of thirty-five miles. It was the biggest quake the planet had ever seen. It tossed ice, land and living beings and creatures into its cold abyss.

The tsunamis waves traveled through the ice eight hundred miles an hour, giving no warning to the planets inhabitants, faster than any seismic wave they had ever endured. There is no such thing as a warning system on Moiromma, all fend for themselves one might say. They never knew what hit them, yet it happenes about every decade, not as big as the most recent one though.

This time the ice sheets blew open like a water spout flinging ice forty feet into the air, and all that was on it. Two thousand inhabitants died. This knocked the planet off its axis. The magnitude of the tremors kept everyone running for days on end.

Iazrak [or IK for short], the brother of Jokaneen, and friend of the old king of Moiromma, was a man of honor and valiant, in the name of bruthood on Moiromma; which of course is a virtue there. Unlike his peers, he had never died, not even once. He lived on an island of ice, on ice with a moat surrounding his small ice-fortress. In the evenings many of the villagers would come and visit IK with their families for a few hours, there he'd tell all the tales he had memorized from the comings and goings on of the many inhabitants of the planets known about within the solo systems, to include the old kings that once ruled the planet, and the great fight he once had with a foe. He was one of the peace makers you could say, but not quite involved with politics. He was more a seer, an odd kind of sort, and encouraged all to live a harmonious life. He talked about the wars before the ice came onto Moiromma, and how the old kings fought the Mountain Lords, the warriors of the olden days. He had said the planet had many trees at one time that gave the Lords much shelter from the Archking of Moir I, and his son King Moir II. And he mentioned the cobblestone streets and long summer days that was part of Moiromma at one time in the past. And all his listeners, some two-hundred from the villages nearby would listen night after night of his tales.

At times he'd even create great excitement with the stories, makeup what he had to, to entertain the people that is, add fiction to fact you could say; but some took a dubious intent to them, if not down right scorn; out of fear and hatred and ignorance, thus, they plotted his demise, his death, his assassination. There were three such zealots in the village that did this plotting.

It would seem they had a stranger walked through the village, IK was the mayor of sort, untitled, but the only spokesman they had, and when the inhabitants so asked him to be, to bestow his wisdom upon their deliberations, he would. This of course, also infuriated the plotting three, the evil doers, whom wanted to dominate the village for their own benefits.

Assassins, that is what they were, for their theme and plot could be seen no other way; hence, the day came around when the crime was imprinted in their brains to go ahead and commit to it. When one

looks at this picture, s/he must remember, the planet had only small, very small villages for the most part, since the king had died in battle and was shifted off to another planet, thus it was full of cell groups mostly, hunting groups, or as I had mentioned, tiny villages per se. And the ones not living in the cell groups, or family packs, and some two or three families to a pack, lived hermit style, or on their own; you may ask why when city-states are more productive, and protective, and I have not the answer, it is just the way it was. Next, let us not forget the assassins, for they are over the horizon, getting their plans in order. With no discipline, there is no law, and with no law there are no limits, thus, the assassins felt: who can harm us? Sinister men of greet greed and lust or power control, and the little material wealth the village had to offer they wanted to use that power.

It came to pass, by way of a rumor that spread wildly throughout the village, Iazrak would meet his death should he remain in the village, and this got to his ears by way of the village folks. It really was meant to scare Iazrak out, without having to murder him, psychological warfare one might conclude. But this was not to take place, helpless the villagers were on Iazrak's behalf, he accepted only the good will of the people that should he remain in the village to be &careful.'

Jokaneen-begged her brother to stop his gatherings, hoping to stop the diabolical will of the assassins but the dimmable plotting against his life was to be carried out.

It would be fair to say, from that time on, no one really slept easily in the village, not as they had before; matter-of-fact, they slept so uneasy, a strange thing took place. One morning IK looked out his ice window to see the whole village deserted; there was only him and the three assassins left. Hence, this little nest of anarchy at the present had lost its control factor, its power-grid if you will; its life support, its reason for the kill to go on.

As time passed, the three found themselves bickering drinking rat alcohol, and ice-bug wine; the humdrum of life on Moiromma had returned-for the most part, back to how it was before [bleak and dreary], but without one's neighbors. The eyes of the three had lost their lust for life. It was shortly after this period when his sister talked him out of leaving, and joining a cell group, thus, retelling his stories, and adding one to it, the one you just heard. And to be honest, he was quite happy to be the storyteller.

In many respects, Singapore is the Switzerland of Asia.

Begun in 1819 as a British trading colony, the Republic of Singapore was founded in 1965 under the leadership of the current Prime Minister's father, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. While it is only 1/5 the size of Rhode Island and three times the size of Washington D.C., it is perhaps the most strategically important global trading, finance and service nexus in Asia.

Here is why you should consider investing in Singapore.

While Hong Kong and Shanghai will argue, Singapore is the busiest port in Asia situated next to the vital trading channel, the Straits of Malacca.

Unlike South Korea and Taiwan, which are heavily dependent on the cyclical electronics industry, Singapore has a well-diversified economy. 70% of its GDP is attributable to finance and services.

Singapore's accounting rules and regulations are amongst the most conservative in the world. For example, its rules on inventory accounting and the expensing of stock options are more conservative than those in the United States.

Trade Surplus

Despite only 1.6% of its land being suitable for agricultural activities and having to import almost everything including water, Singapore manages to have a trade surplus.

Singapore has a balanced budget, a stable currency and still manages to allocate 5% of GDP for defense.

It represents a multi-ethnic society with 77% Chinese, 14% Malay and 8% Indian.

Singapore's educational performance is legendary. The fact that it has twice as many Internet users as television sets is telling.

Singapore's New Resorts

Singapore is also changing with the times. To generate more investment, tax revenue, and add a bit of sparkle, Singapore recently approved the development of two large casino resorts. It is part of a strategy to reduce the country's dependence on manufacturing and to position itself as a livelier tourism destination. Of course, there will be restrictions. Singaporeans will have to pay a $60 entry fee and the gambling areas will be restricted to just 5% of the resort. According to projections, the resorts will lead to $4 billion in investments, $3.5 billion in annual revenues, 35,000 jobs and $350 million per year in taxes and fees.

Singapore has also made great strides in patching up misunderstandings with its neighbor to the north, Malaysia, from whom it split in 1965. Tax issues, water supply agreements and transportation arrangements are all moving much more smoothly.

Singapore is adept at holding on to its manufacturing base even as several large semiconductor manufacturers such as National Semiconductor announced plans to move plants to China and Malaysia. For thirty years, Singapore has relied on electronics as the backbone of its manufacturing sector but is making the transition to a more service and R&D economy. Electronics is about 40% of manufacturing output but accounts for only 5% of employment. Surprisingly, some firms are moving manufacturing centers from China to Singapore due to its infrastructure, logistics and laws protecting intellectual property. Exxon Mobil, Shell and Sumitomo are expanding petrochemical facilities and Singapore added 27,000 manufacturing jobs last year by moving up the food chain.

After 8.4% GDP growth in 2004 and a weak start early this year, Singapore's economy posted 12% plus growth in the second quarter and should be a solid performer over the next few years. Continued strong global demand for transportation, communications and logistics services, increasing IT spending, rising consumer spending and property prices and expanded tourism all point to continued growth.

An easy and smart way to invest in Singapore is through the Singapore iShare (EWS) which tracks the Singapore Straits index. It is up 26% over the past year and up 9.4% year to date.

Its largest positions are in Singapore Telecom, United Overseas Bank and DBS Bank. Even better, it is tax efficient and has an annual expense ratio of only 0.59%. Trading at 14 times projected earnings, the Singapore market is still attractive. By comparison, the Switzerland market and iShare (EWL) is trading at 18 times earnings.

The epitome of quality and increasingly creative, Singapore is a great core holding for any global portfolio.

My children, my wife and I have been fortunate to have lived in the town of Oakland NJ, for the past 18 years. The commitment to kids sports programs, especially girls softball, I think would be hard to surpass by any other town this size. ( 14,000 -15,000 people).

I have seen many girls flourish in the Softball program, playing on traveling teams, and at the varsity level at our High School. Part of the success the girls have is due to the efforts of a handful of men and women who are the commissioners, coaches and administrators of these programs I would hate to think what my daughter's life would be like if she was not playing softball. She loves that softball.

In the spirit of keeping the game going; I have seen them organize teams, balance schedules, and choose coaches. I have watched them scramble to find an umpire so the game could be played. I have seen them on the golf cart riding around - trying to locate the key that opens the shed, so the lights could be turned on for a night game. They are always around to make sure that things worked. I wonder how they are able to calm parents, satisfy their critics, and keep a cool head in so many volatile situations. I guess the answer is they love the game more than it's headaches.

My thanks to the tireless people that run the sports programs in the town of Oakland.

I can't answer that questions until I ask a number of questions first.

Whether you're self-employed or you work for someone else, you're new to business or a seasoned expert, one of the best ways to get ahead in business is to find a mentor. And some highly successful people even have more than one.

What's a mentor?

A mentor is someone who is willing to take you under his or her wing, give you advice and suggestions to help you improve your skills and business acumen, show you how they do something that helps them succeed, and help you reach your goals. He or she is someone who is already skilled, experienced and successful at what you need to learn.

For instance, one of my mentors is Joan Stewart, The Publicity Hound, a former newspaper editor turned publicity guru who is a very successful online entrepreneur. I chose her because she is a few years ahead of me with her Internet success and she has always been willing to help me. She offers excellent feedback on business ideas I'm considering, gives me suggestions about how to improve the idea, sends me resources, reviews my ebooks and newsletters, and provides mental support. I also have several other people in my business sphere who mentor me about other issues in my business. They are all people who have "been there/done that."

A mentor can work with you on an informal or formal basis. Joan helps me on an informal basis, but she also helps others more formally through her paid mentorship program. (Lucky me!) Some companies pair seasoned employees with newer ones to "show them the ropes" and help them succeed. Usually an arrangement like this comes with certain requirements, company policies and some way to evaluate its success.

In her initial one-hour consultation with mentee Michelle Tennant of Wasabi Public Relations, Joan Stewart gave Michelle an idea for her client, a cosmetic dentist. The result? A popular Top 40 radio station in Denver offered the dentist the equivalent of $250,000 in advertising, for free. Wouldn't you like this kind of mentor?

Identifying and recruiting a mentor may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be.

If you work in a big company, there may be a formal program already set up for you. Here's the route I'd use to find the right mentor if I worked in such a company.

First, I'd ask my boss if there was a formal program within the company and how I could become part of it. If she didn't know of one, then I'd go to the Human Resources department and talk to the human resources manager.

If there was no program, I would have a couple of options. I could try to develop one (which would be an excellent learning experience, as well as a way to showcase my organizational and team-building qualities), or I could create an informal relationship with someone I admired and knew I could learn from within the company.

If I chose to simply find a mentor without creating a whole program, I'd take a look at everyone "above" me in the company. Specifically, I'd want someone who:

- Was at least two levels further up the corporate ladder than I was.

- Was a good, easy-to-understand communicator.

- Was really good at his job.

- Had the confidence of his superiors.

- Was willing to teach me the ropes, and who I could help somewhat, too (perhaps by doing research or writing for him).

- Had mentored others in the past (if possible--I suggest you get a recommendation).

On the other hand, if you're reading this, you may be self-employed. So how do YOU find the right mentor? Here's what I did to find mine (and I believe in having more than one mentor):

- I decided what I needed to learn.

- I watched who was posting on discussion forums and who has authored books or articles on topics I needed to learn.

- I subscribed to their newsletters and visited their websites.

- I checked out the potential mentors -- meaning I tried to learn about their reputation, and I listened to seminars they gave and read books and articles written by my prospective mentors to see how they might help me.

- I looked to see if they had a formal mentoring program in which I could participate.

- I spoke to my prospective mentors to see if they were interested in working with me. (Sometimes I simply ask questions without trying to make it a formal thing, however.)

Should you join a paid mentorship program? It is often well worth the money you invest in yourself when you join a formal mentoring program. Not only will you have the full attention of your mentor on a regular basis, but it will also make you accountable for setting and reaching your goals, and your mentor will be there to give you ideas and help you every step of the way.

And being accountable to someone else for completing my tasks and accomplishing my goals has always helped me! If I know I'll have to tell someone that I made the phone calls, finished the project, or followed up on our previous conversation, I'll be much more likely to do it within the time frame we agreed upon. And when I do each of the steps that my mentor and I discuss, I definitely reach my goals...sometimes faster than a speeding bullet!

1. REVIEW YOUR PROGRESS. Take a look at your accomplishments since the beginning of the year. Are you on track to accomplish your goals? Have you lost sight of some goals in the busy-ness of daily activities? Acknowledge the progress that you have made and determine which goals you will continue to pursue.

Ask yourself: What have I accomplished to date? Which goals are most important to me?

2. REASSESS YOUR GOALS. Are you clear about what you want to achieve? Are your goals based on your true values or on something you feel you should do or ought to do? Give yourself permission to re-define or even eliminate goals that may no longer fit.

Ask yourself: Are my goals based on my true values? What do I really want to achieve?

3. RENEW YOUR COMMITMENT TO YOUR SUCCESS. Are you committed to achieving your goals? Decide that you will do what it takes to be successful in accomplishing the goals that are important to you.

Ask yourself: What is one thing I can do today to strengthen my commitment?

4. GET SUPPORT IN REACHING YOUR GOALS. Any endeavor is easier and more fun when shared with another. Having a teacher, mentor or a coach who is there to nurture and support you, to offer feedback and perspective and to challenge you to do more than you could accomplish on your own will increase your likelihood for success.

Ask yourself: Who will I ask to support me in reaching my goal?

Create Your Own Business Cards, Part 1. MLB 2nd Half Outlook.

In this lesson, we will create a business card, using Microsoft Word. I created a new template for my business card. It can be viewed at: http://janes-place.com/bus_card.htm

Choose the information you want to place on your card before beginning.

Here's how I did it:

Go to 'start' --'Microsoft Word' -- 'file menu' -- 'page setup'. Choose the 'Margins Tab'. Type in 1.25 for the Left and Right margins. That way, two cards will fit on a 8 1/2 x 11in. sheet, side by side. Click 'ok'.

In the 'Format Menu' choose 'Columns'. Where it asks for the number of columns, use the arrows to go down until the number 'two' is in the box. Go down to 'Width' and type in 2.75in. The 'Spacing' will adjust automatically. Be sure the 'Equal Column Width' and the 'Line Between' boxes are checked. Click 'ok'.

Let's save it, at this point. Go to the 'File Menu' and choose 'Save As'. You can save it in the same folder we saved the Letterhead, if you choose. I saved mine with my letterhead in 'Business Stationery'. Give the file a name. I named mine -- 'My Business Card'. Click 'Save'.

Go to the 'Table Menu' and choose 'Insert Table'. Set the number of 'Columns' and 'Rows' to 'one'. Click 'ok'.

A long, thin box will appear. Move your mouse cursor to the bottom line, until it turns into a double-headed arrow. Click on the double-headed arrow and drag it down to the 2in. mark on the left hand side ruler. If the ruler isn't visible in your document, go to the 'View Menu' and click on 'ruler'.

Click inside the box and add your picture. You have two options here:

1362-->1362-->1203-->1203-->1) You can use 'ClipArt', by going to the 'Insert menu' -- 'Picture' -- 'ClipArt. Choose your category and find the graphic suitable for your business, click 'ok'. The image will appear in your document.

2) You can use your company logo, if you have one, or another picture on your hard drive, by going to the 'Insert Menu' -- 'Picture' -- 'From File'. The pictures on your hard drive (saved in 'My Documents' -- 'My Pictures' will appear). Scroll down the list until you find the one you want to insert. Click on the picture you have chosen, to highlight it. Then click on the 'Insert' button. The picture will appear in your document.

To move the picture around inside your table, click on the picture. You will see a four arrow symbol. This allows you to move the picture up, down, right or left, by dragging it to the position you want. I wanted my picture to appear in the left, top position, so I moved it to that position. If you want your picture centered, click on it and click the 'center' button on the tool bar. [The center tool will be lines of text centered. It is the second picture of text shown.]

To change the size of your picture, click on it, then on one of the corners and drag it to the desired size.

Yankees take the division in the final weekend of the season.It'll be a longjam with The Twins, Indians, Rangers, and possibly Oakland in the WC race. The O's will continue to fade and finish under .500

Central: White Sox will hang on to the division, but not before getting a scare from Minnesota. White Sox win the division by 3 or 4 games. Twins get the Wild Card

West: Angels keep Rangers and A's at bay, and coast to the title by 7 or 8 games.

National League:

East: Braves overtake the Nats in late Aug/early Sept as their pitchers get healthy. Braves take division by 4 or 5 games. Marlins make a mad dash at the end, but come up short (2nd place), but capture the Wild Card. Phils and Mets fade.

Central: Bold prediction here...Cards take division by 20 games!!! Cubs and Stros tese their fans by staying in the Wild Card hunt, but fall short in September.

West; Padres slowly but surely pull away, as the D Backs and Dodgers continue play up and down baseball. Pads win by about 10 or 12 games. Bonds comes back late in the year to keep the fans interested in SF, but they'll be way back by then.

Playoffs: 1st round Yanks eliminate Twins (AGAIN) Angels beat White Sox in a hard fought series

Cards beat Marlins Braves beat Pads

2nd round:

Angels take Yanks in 6. Cards sweep Braves.

World Series:

St Louis wins the World Series in 6.

Storylines of the 2nd half: Pujols gets into the triple crown race vs. Lee. But Lee wins batting title, while Albert takes the HR and RBI crown.

Sosa, Bonds, and Clemens retire at the end of the season.
